Opposition Party Members Detained After Congress in Ankara

After the HDP (People’s Democratic Party) party conference on Sunday the 23rd, 11 party members were detained by the Turkish government. The move reveals the undemocratic and authoritarian nature of the regime.

The party’s congress took place on Sunday and was attended by thousands of members and international guests. The party has been a staunch opponent of the ruling AKP party and their militaristic nationalism.

The state’s willingness to resort to violence when faced with genuine democratic opposition demonstrates why the boycott of the Turkish state is so vital for supporting the rights of Turkish, Kurdish and other communities facing repression by the AKP regime.

11 party members in charge of the Congress’ sound system were arrested in the city of Ankara. Journalists were not allowed to photograph the arrests.
